Doctors Medical Center Performs Zephyr Valve Device Placement to Treat Severe Respiratory Conditions

Doctors Medical Center has performed its first Endobronchial Valve Placement, a treatment for severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema via a bronchoscopy procedure during which Zephyr Valves are placed into the affected lung. Doctors Medical Center is one of the first facilities in California's Central Valley to perform this procedure.

During the procedure, a catheter is introduced into the lung to target the diseased, hyperinflated lobe. Once the valve size is determined, it is placed to allow trapped air to escape but not re-enter. Typically, 3 to 5 valves are placed to fully treat the affected lobe.

Dr. Maykel Irandost, an interventional pulmonologist, performed the procedure and placed three Zephyr Valves in a patient.

“We are excited to introduce Zephyr Valve Treatment to the Central Valley to help ensure severe COPD and emphysema patients have access to a minimally invasive procedure to improve their quality of life,” said Raj Sandhu, Director of Respiratory Services. “We are pleased to provide this minimally invasive, advanced therapy designed to help patients with varying severity of symptoms who qualify for the procedure.

This is another affirmation of our commitment to invest in the health and well-being of our community and provide our patients with advanced care for their chronic respiratory conditions.”
