Immediate treatment is critical for patients who are suffering a stroke. At Doctors Medical Center of Modesto, the collaboration of emergency, critical care, neurology, neurosurgery and neurointerventional services are important. Each provides a separate service. The neuro interventional radiologist may perform minimally invasive procedures that involve a catheter being inserted into a blood vessel in the brain to remove blood clots or stop any bleeding.
With the goal of providing our patients with the highest level of care, this procedure decreases risks and may shorten hospital stays, reducing recovery time.
What Is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted or blocked
- Clot (Ischemic)
- Bleed (hemorrhagic)
When this happens, brain cells in the immediate area start to die because they do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. A stroke can lead to disabilities such as paralysis, cognitive deficits, speech and emotional problems, pain and numbness.
Major risk factors for stroke:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Smoking/alcohol use
- Illicit drug use
- Family history of stroke
- Being 55 or older

Blood Flow Back to the Brain After Stroke Treatment
When a person has a stroke, they need fast treatment to help blood flow get back to the brain and start healing. At Doctors Medical Center, we make sure stroke patients receive high-quality care.
One way we do this is by checking how much blood flow returns to the brain after a blood clot is removed.
Blood flow after treatment is measured with a scale: Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (TICI).
The TICI Scale shows how much blood comes back to the brain after a clot is removed.
0 = No blood flow, 1 = little blood flow, 2 = some blood flow, 3 = full blood flow.
A score of 2b or 3 means that most or all of the blood flow has returned to the brain.
Our Results
Doctors Medical Center: 96%
National Average: 88%
This means that 96% of our stroke patients who had a clot removed had most or all blood restored to their brain. Our results are similar to and slightly better than the national average.
When more blood flow returns to the brain, patients often have better recovery and outcomes.
These results include stroke patients who had a thrombectomy, a procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain.
